Rooibos Organic

£2.75

If you want to know what rooibos actually tastes like, unflavoured and at its best, this is the one. I chose it because it is a really lovely example of exactly how I think rooibos should be: pure, honest, and properly good.

Rooibos (or redbush, the same plant by its English name) is not technically a tea at all; it comes from a South African shrub called Aspalathus linearis, which grows only in the Cederberg region. This is a Grade 1 rooibos, the top grade, and it is certified organic. The leaves are long-cut, and they give a smooth, full-bodied, naturally sweet cup with a deep red colour and gentle notes of caramel, vanilla and red fruit.

Because it is naturally caffeine-free, it is a drink for any time of day, right through to bedtime. Some people take it plain, some with a little milk, some with honey or a slice of lemon; there is no wrong way, so make it yours. If you would like to know more about rooibos, where it grows and whether it lives up to its healthy reputation, I have written a full guide.

"Clear amber colour and an inviting rooibos aroma. Clean fresh flavour, the rooibos is true and the flavour conveys well. A fine example of a good quality rooibos, this is something simple done well." - Great Taste Awards 2022 (2 Stars)

Brew at 100°C for 3 to 7 minutes; because rooibos is low in tannin, it will not turn bitter, so leave it as long as you like for a deeper cup.

Lovely colour and flavour but my favourite is Turmeric Gold

Again a lovely tea and I preferred this one with honey and no milk. I had to drop one star as my favourite is still Turmeric Gold (with honey and a splash of milk) and this was the only way to reflect a preference.
