Gunpowder Green
A highly popular green tea from China, the leaves are rolled into tight balls, said to resemble pellets of gunpowder. These pellets vary in size with the leaf grade that was picked and the higher quality, the smaller the pellets. This particular Gunpowder is called a ‘Pinhead’ or ‘Temple of Heaven’. As the tea brews the pellets will unfurl resulting in a strong green tea with smoky undertones. The strength comes from the manner in which the leaves are processed. Whilst they are pan-fried like most Chinese green teas, with Gunpowder teas the lid is left on, trapping moisture and intensifying the flavour drawing out more nutty and marine notes, with a darker brassier liquor than most green teas.
