Orange Blossom Oolong
Often once someone has found an Earl Grey they like, the next thing they almost always ask is whether I have anything similar, but a bit different. This is the tea I recommend to them, and it tends to win people over on the first sip; it did exactly that to me.
It is a loose-leaf blend of oolong from Taiwan and black tea from Sri Lanka, with jasmine petals and naturally dried orange. If oolong is new to you, it is the great in-between tea: partially oxidised, so it sits between green and black, with more warmth and depth than a green but without the full strength of a black. This one leans to the darker, fuller end of the oolong scale, yet stays remarkably smooth and easy to drink, with none of the bitterness you might expect.
The key thing to know is that it is floral, not fruity. This is orange blossom, not orange juice: a gentle, honeyed fragrance, more like sitting in a sunny garden than biting into an orange. One customer in Florida called it her cup of sunshine, which I have never been able to improve on.
It is best without milk, to my taste, and it is caffeinated, so a lovely first brew of the day or an afternoon pause.
"The orange blossom is so scented and delightful; there's an almost honeyed note too." - Great Taste Awards 2022 (1 Star)
