Korakundah Nilgiri Organic
This was the first organic black tea I brought into the range, and it has earned its place as an everyday favourite.
It comes from the Korakundah estate in the Nilgiri Hills of southern India. Nilgiri means Blue Mountains, and the estate sits at nearly 8,000 feet. It was, at one point, certified the highest organic tea garden in the world. This is high, rolling hill country; a world away from the steep slopes of Darjeeling or the flat plains of Assam, and the tea is grown organically, with real care for the land around it.
Part of what makes Nilgiri worth seeking out is its character. The gardens here were first planted with China tea bushes, later joined by Assamica, and then by clones bred especially for these hills; a mix that gives Nilgiri a flavour of its own, rather than an echo of another region. Nilgiri is often known for its frost teas, a winter speciality prized for its rarity and unique wintergreen note; but it is the spring and autumn pickings, like this one, that make for fantastic easy-drinking black teas.
In the cup it is bright and lively with good body: think of a Yorkshire-style blend, less malty and less deep than an Assam or a traditional English Breakfast. It takes milk happily, is just as good without, and makes a very good iced tea. One customer, a loyal Assam drinker, called it "a lovely alternative... when I want a lighter, brighter brew."
At this price, I think it is a wonderful cupboard staple: an easy, organic everyday cup, done right.
Brew at 100°C for 3 - 4 minutes. and strong enough to add milk if you prefer.
